Being versatile is Sandra Rauch’s strength, because after her apprenticeship as a type designer, she studied both communication design in Berlin and graphics and painting in Dresden. Her preference is therefore for adding various techniques such as photography, typography and screen printing easily to her work, and she uses acrylic glass instead of canvas. Here she layers her scenic condensations of scenes from the metropolises of New York and Hong Kong on the front and back. She attaches great importance to bright, expressive colours, is virtuosic in her use of space and perspective, and opens up vistas that resemble the photo camera and film camera. Trickfully she arranges graphic symbols, neon signs and various advertising typographies along the facades of houses and street canyons.

For this very reason, her lively-looking city scenarios are a layering of the most diverse experiences. Sandra Rauch has photographed and researched the city herself. The end result is a work that describes this discovery from memory and charges it with what she has seen and imagined.

She transforms an urban quarter into a media experience. Tracking the pulse of the city, she develops a visual network that follows its own laws and gives each metropolis its own individual character. For her, urban space is a fascinating dialogue of information and typography, colour banners and symbols. Sandra Rauch animates squares such as New York’s Times Square into a densely overlapping tapestry of façade advertisements and signets, the most diverse signs and symbol systems. These structures form a colour-intensive extract of everyday urban life. Her works are also material experiments that enable a transfer to the world of experience on other continents.

In Sandra Rauch’s work, neon light shines, colours are partly transformed and nevertheless one believes the realities of her pictures. She keeps their interpretability partly open and enables the viewer to access new patterns of perception despite encrypted codes in foreign languages, Asian letters and pictograms. Finally, her metropolitan images are an internationally readable picture and a great invitation to immerse oneself in worlds of experience.
